Part II - The Day
14
Lian woke up and stretched. He blinked his eyes to adjust to the light of morning coming in through the thin blinds. He looked out the window to see the city waking up, stores opening and people bustling about. He looked back into the room to see Owen sitting in a rocking chair in the corner, staring into space. Lian staring at him seemed to awaken him. He tapped his cane on the ground twice and looked up into Lianâs eyes with a serious face.
âToday is the day, I can feel it.â

Johnathan walked downstairs in his childhood home to see his mom setting several plates at the end of the kitchen table. She went back into the kitchen to grab the food she had prepared. Johnathan thought the stack of plates looked a little too big, so he counted 13. He made his way into the kitchen to help his mom. He picked up a few pans of eggs. âAre they here already?â
âI set them up in the barn; they seemed exhausted. Unfortunately, we donât have any more beds, but the hay is soft enough.â
âOkay, thank you,â Johnathan said, putting the pans down on the table.
Rebecca put down two sheets of bacon and sausage and then went and got the morning bread out of the oven and put it on a plate with butter. She dusted off her apron and went outside to get Jonathanâs men out of the barn.
âFoodâs ready. Iâd get in there before the boys or else youâll go hungry.â
âThank you, maâam,â said a few of the men as they stretched and made their way inside. Rebecca led the men inside where they said hi to Johnathan and each got a plate. Rebecca let out a big sigh and looked at Johnathan. âShall we?â Then she walked to the stairs with a pot and a wooden spoon. Johnathan covered his ears as his men with their mouths full did the same. Then Rebecca started banging the pot with her spoon. âBreakfast! First come, first serve!â
The sound of seven sets of feet hitting the floor soon followed. There were walls banging, some âoofsâ and âahhs,â as they pushed each other out of the way to get downstairs first. Soon the dining room and kitchen were filled with the sounds of utensils clanging, and lips smacking. John came strolling down the stairs, stretching his neck and yawning. As he made his way into the dining room, his chair at the head of the table was vacant. Before he made his way to it, his kids started passing around a plate and put a healthy portion of everything on it. They set it in front of him with a bottle of pepper hot sauce just as he sat down next to his wife. He put a napkin on his lap and kissed his wife. âThanks boys. Looks lovely as always, dear.â
When they finished breakfast, they were joking around and telling stories of their dreams. David told them about a dream where the wind started blowing down the meadows and was playing a harp.
